Homelessness Prevention: Residents in Supportive Housing to Gain Financial Management Skills via Grant from People’s United Community Foundation
Hicksville, NY (April 5, 2017) – People’s United Community Foundation this month awarded a grant to nonprofit CN Guidance & Counseling Services to reduce risk of homelessness among low- and moderate-income individuals living in supportive housing—apartments across Long Island equipped with special supportive services for people who are gradually building their independence.
The grant fuels personalized financial skills-training—covering how to pay rent/bills on time, how to manage money, and how to use credit responsibly—for at-risk housing residents across Nassau/Suffolk. Development of such skills correlates with a lower risk for homelessness and losing housing. Trainings will be delivered by CN Guidance, a leading regional provider of holistic, Integrated Care, a model that treats mental health, addiction issues, housing challenges, and physical health in a coordinated way.
Steven Santino, Officer of People’s United Community Foundation and Senior Vice President of People’s United Bank, shared, “We are proud to partner with CN Guidance to assist the residents of their housing program in obtaining the money management skills needed to achieve long term self-sufficiency and financial stability.”
CN Guidance provides or facilitates a variety of housing settings for individuals who urgently need affordable housing, both transitional and long term. The goal of its residential program is to provide or support safe and stable home living situations, which allow residents to grow and achieve their fullest potentials.
Jeffrey Friedman, CEO of CN Guidance, shared, “Our residential housing program provides each client with the tools and skills needed to succeed in life through a supportive and personalized environment. We are so grateful to the People’s United Community Foundation for their support of skills-training for residents of supportive housing. This will truly enable us to help continue making a difference in individuals’ lives across Long Island.”
