Hicksville, NY (August 12, 2016) – At a time when 1 in 6 Long Island residents face a mental health disorder ranging from anxiety to severe depression, and more than 350 people per year are dying from overdosing on heroin or prescription narcotics, CN Guidance & Counseling Services was recognized for providing top-quality services to local residents.
In mid-July, CN Guidance—a nonprofit serving Long Islanders since 1972—received the “Best of Hicksville” award in the category of Outpatient Mental Health Clinic for its work in helping over 4,700 families and individuals annually address and overcome conditions ranging from addiction to suicidality. CN Guidance is driven by more than 300 employees, including psychiatrists, licensed social workers, nurses and nurse practitioners, licensed mental health counselors, and substance use treatment specialists.
“We are honored to be recognized for the positive impact that our team’s work is having on the community,” said CN Guidance CEO Jeffrey Friedman. “At the same time, we must consciously continue to strengthen the mental health and addiction treatment services that we provide, along with enhanced access to our integrated, comprehensive services.”
Over the past three years, CN Guidance has sought and received more than $7 million in Federal and State grants to fuel the needed expansion of services during a time of great change in healthcare.
Friedman noted that people with serious mental illness continue, on average, to die 25 years earlier than others because they typically don’t access doctors to diagnose or treat chronic conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease. CN Guidance is one of a very few L.I. organizations that provide integrated care. The nonprofit is licensed by two separate authorities in New York State, enabling it to provide both mental health and substance use treatment, a rarity among providers.
The Hicksville Award Program is an annual awards program honoring the achievements and accomplishments of local businesses and organizations throughout the Hicksville area. Recognition is given to those entities that have shown the ability to use their best practices and implemented programs to generate long-term value for the community. Winners across award categories were determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Hicksville Award Program and data provided by third parties.
